9:00 A.M. Welcome and Introductions

9:05 A.M.-12:00 P.M. Program: Herbal Class by Susan Burek. Discussion on how probiotics work, and what they can and cannot do for your flock. Susan will also expand on the concept with native herbs on range and your flock's natural self-medication.

Seed Exchange by Lola Corstange.
An exchange of locally gathered seeds not limited to herbs seeds. This can be seeds from plants that you really enjoy in your garden, or have some benefit from that you would like to share with others. Instructions detailed in the GFBA March 2008 newsletter.

8:45 A.M. Meet in Hampton Inn Hotel Lobby

9:00 A.M. Carpool to Guinea Farm

  • We will be seeing over 5,000 Helmeted Guinea Fowl breeders in over 22 varieties (colors) in individual pens and houses
  • We will see and learn about Jumbo Guinea Fowl and the exotic Crested and Vulturine Guinea Fowl.
  • We will get ideas for housing, automatic waterers, automatic feeders and poultry yards
  • See the guinea greenhouse -discuss the effects of lighting and heat on the egg laying season
  • We will tour the new brooder house for keets
  • We will see the incubator room and how thousands of eggs are stored for incubation
  • There will be a demonstration on how to properly package eggs and keets for shipping
  • Program on learning how to correctly identify colors of guinea fowl by Ralph Winter
  • Discussion on wormers and feed for guinea fowl
  • Discussion pinioning and wing clipping - why to or not to do either ...
  • Q&A sessions every step of the way along the tour
  • We will get to see the other animals on site - llamas, peafowl, gamebirds, etc.

12:00 P.M- Lunch: Catered picnic at Guinea Farm - included in registration fee -  no additional charge

9:00 A.M.-10:30 A.M. Program by TN State University Research Dept. Discussion of their research findings on Guinea Fowl. Our speakers from Kenya will address the subject of Guinea Fowl in Africa.  Their free-range diet will be compared the diet of guinea fowl on comercial feed in the USA (on free range by day and housed by night), and the diet of guinea fowl who are kept in total confinement.
